Both Cooper Rush and Trey Lance saw playing time in the Cowboys’ blowout loss yesterday.
Following that game, it was unclear who would step in as Dak Prescott’s immediate replacement, but that question has now been answered.
Head coach Mike McCarthy announced on Monday that Rush will serve as Dallas’ starter for Week 11.
The veteran quarterback has made 31 appearances and seven starts during the regular season, all with the Cowboys.
Considering his experience and familiarity with the team’s offense, it’s not surprising that Rush will stay atop the depth chart for at least another week.
The soon-to-be 31-year-old had a rough outing on Sunday, managing only 45 passing yards and fumbling twice.
Lance, who played 15 snaps in the second half, also contributed to the turnovers with one interception on his six pass attempts.
With Prescott likely out for the remainder of the season, the Cowboys lack a clear candidate to take over QB1 duties.
McCarthy also mentioned that the team plans to add a quarterback in light of Prescott’s hamstring injury.
The focus will be on acquiring healthy depth as Dallas searches for solutions on offense.
Currently ranked 22nd in scoring with an average of 19.7 points per game, and possessing the league’s second-worst rushing attack, the team cannot rely heavily on the ground game.
This stretch of starts provides Rush with a chance to boost his market value ahead of free agency, while Lance, who saw his first regular season action as a Cowboy yesterday, will also be looking to prove himself.
The Cowboys are currently 3-6 this season, and the struggles seen with Prescott leading the team suggested that making the playoffs would be a tall order.
Dallas will proceed with its current options under center, with Rush slated to start in the upcoming game against the Texans.
Further quarterback decisions will be made based on the evaluation of that performance.
