Veteran NASCAR driver Greg Biffle made a surprising return to the NASCAR Cup Series in 2022 when he raced for NY Racing Team in the Daytona 500. That appearance reignited speculation about whether the former Roush Fenway Racing standout could make another comeback, especially with the prestigious Daytona 500 looming every February.
Biffle, now 54, remains one of NASCAR’s most respected figures. With 19 Cup Series wins, 20 Xfinity Series victories, and two Truck Series championships under his belt, his pedigree is undeniable. But would he take another shot at the Great American Race? According to a recent interview, Biffle hasn’t ruled it out.
“Never Say Never”
Speaking to Dominic Aragon, Biffle expressed a willingness to consider more NASCAR opportunities under the right circumstances.
“I love racing, and the Daytona 500 is such a special race,” Biffle said. “If the right opportunity came along, with a competitive team and car, I’d be open to it. But it has to make sense for everyone involved.”
When Biffle returned in 2022, he drove a Chevrolet for NY Racing Team, finishing 36th after dealing with mechanical issues. Despite the result, fans were thrilled to see him back on the track. However, the challenge for any returning veteran is the level of competition in the Cup Series. With top-tier organizations like Hendrick Motorsports, Joe Gibbs Racing, and Team Penske dominating the sport, any potential comeback for Biffle would likely hinge on finding a competitive mid-tier team willing to take a chance.
Opportunities on the Horizon?
The expansion of chartered and non-chartered entries for the Daytona 500 often creates opportunities for one-off entries. Teams like Beard Motorsports and The Money Team Racing have become staples of Daytona’s field, running part-time schedules focused solely on superspeedway races. Could one of these teams approach Biffle?
One possibility is Legacy Motor Club, a team undergoing changes with Jimmie Johnson’s leadership and a commitment to growing their competitive edge. Another potential suitor could be Spire Motorsports, which has shown interest in bringing in seasoned veterans for marquee events.
Fan Reception and Legacy
Biffle’s potential return would be welcomed by fans who followed his successful career during NASCAR’s peak years. As a driver with wins in every top NASCAR series, he remains a fan favorite and a symbol of consistency from the early 2000s era of the sport.
For now, though, Biffle remains noncommittal, focused on family life and other ventures outside the racecar. But with the 2025 Daytona 500 entry list still forming and teams potentially looking for experienced hands to guide their efforts, the door isn’t entirely closed.
As Biffle himself said: “I’m not actively looking to jump back in, but if the opportunity is right, you never know.”
Only time will tell if the Biff makes another run at Daytona glory, but fans can certainly dream of seeing the #16—or perhaps another number—back on the high banks of Daytona.
