Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has finally spoken out about the claims that NFL referees were biased during the Kansas City Chiefs’ game against the Houston Texans.
The argument began after Mahomes was called for two roughing the passer penalties.
The first penalty happened in the first quarter after Mahomes threw a pass and was hit by the Texans’ defensive end Will Anderson Jr.
The second penalty took place in the third quarter when Mahomes slid and got hit by Folorunso Fatukasi and Henry To’oTo’o.
Mahomes’ penalties led to a big discussion across the country, but he believes that the referees are just trying their best to make the correct decisions.
“I’ve realized that no matter what goes on in the game, people will talk about whether you win or keep winning,” Mahomes shared in an interview on 96.5. “I don’t really focus on it,” he continued.
Mahomes also recognized that he has experienced both sides of these calls. He mentioned that the referees are doing their best to make sure the players, not the penalties, determine the game’s outcome.
The three-time Super Bowl champion highlighted that even with the penalties, the Texans had chances to win, like missed field goals and a struggling offensive line.
He explained a situation where people said he was “flopping” by slowing down before getting pushed out of bounds.
“I probably shouldn’t have done that,” Mahomes confessed, but he insisted that he just wanted to avoid being hit by the Texans’ defender.
Mahomes stays confident in the Chiefs’ skills and believes the referees are doing a fair job as the team gets ready for their upcoming game against the Buffalo Bills.
