NASCAR driver Rajah Caruth is giving back to his hometown in a big way, launching a STEM-focused racing program at the DC Public Library. The initiative, aimed at inspiring young minds, blends science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with motorsports, providing students with a unique opportunity to explore the technical side of racing.
Caruth, a Washington, D.C. native, has always been passionate about both education and racing. Now, he’s combining the two to introduce local youth to the world of motorsports through hands-on learning experiences.
A Homecoming with a Purpose
Caruth’s journey to NASCAR was anything but conventional. Unlike many drivers who grew up racing go-karts, Caruth started in iRacing, a virtual racing simulator, before working his way up through ARCA and into NASCAR’s national series. His nontraditional path into motorsports makes him an ideal mentor for young students who may not have considered racing as a career path.
“Coming back home to D.C. and giving kids an opportunity to learn about racing through STEM is really special,” Caruth said. “Motorsports isn’t just about driving—it’s about engineering, aerodynamics, data analysis, and problem-solving. I want to show these kids that there’s a place for them in racing, whether it’s behind the wheel or behind the scenes.”
STEM Meets Motorsports
The STEM Racing Program will introduce students to various aspects of racing, including:
• Aerodynamics and physics – Understanding how cars generate speed and handle corners.
• Engineering and mechanics – Learning about engines, suspensions, and the technology behind race cars.
• Data and strategy – Analyzing lap times, fuel consumption, and tire wear to make strategic race decisions.
Through interactive activities, simulations, and potential guest appearances from industry professionals, the program will give students a firsthand look at the role STEM plays in motorsports.
Inspiring the Next Generation
By launching this program, Caruth hopes to open doors for underrepresented communities in racing. NASCAR has made strides in increasing diversity within the sport, and initiatives like this play a crucial role in fostering the next generation of drivers, engineers, and mechanics.
The program is set to kick off at the DC Public Library, where students will engage in workshops, hands-on experiments, and discussions about careers in motorsports.
