In a significant legal development within NASCAR, Jimmie Johnson’s Legacy Motor Club (LMC) has achieved a preliminary court victory against Rick Ware Racing (RWR) concerning a contested $45 million charter agreement. The dispute centers on a deal initiated in March 2025, wherein RWR agreed to sell one of its charters to LMC. According to court filings, RWR signed the agreement, initialing each page, but later attempted to withdraw from the transaction, prompting LMC to file a lawsuit.

LMC contends that the agreement is legally binding and that RWR’s attempt to renege on the deal is unjustified. The court’s preliminary ruling favors LMC, allowing the team to proceed with plans to expand its operations by acquiring the additional charter. This expansion is part of LMC’s broader strategy to enhance its competitiveness in the NASCAR Cup Series.
The court’s decision also reflects broader tensions within NASCAR regarding the charter system. Other teams, such as 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports, have engaged in legal actions challenging NASCAR’s charter agreements, citing concerns over revenue sharing and competitive fairness.
As the legal proceedings continue, the court’s preliminary ruling marks a pivotal moment for LMC, reinforcing its position in the ongoing dispute and underscoring the complexities of NASCAR’s charter system.
