NASCAR’s Transparent Approach to Talladega Disqualifications

In a move to uphold transparency and integrity, NASCAR has publicly displayed the components that led to the disqualifications of Joey Logano and Ryan Preece following the recent race at Talladega Superspeedway. The Infractions Unveiled

Joey Logano, who initially secured a fifth-place finish, was disqualified due to a violation involving his car’s rear spoiler assembly. Specifically, one of the 18 bolts securing the spoiler brace was found to be loose, contravening Sections 14.5.8.E and 14.1.P of the NASCAR rulebook, which mandate that all fasteners remain securely fastened during events. Team Penske acknowledged the oversight, stating it was unintentional and occurred during the race. 

Ryan Preece, who had achieved a career-best second-place finish, faced disqualification due to the presence of an unapproved third shim in his car’s rear spoiler area. NASCAR regulations permit only two shims, each not exceeding 0.050 inches in thickness. The additional shim, regardless of intent, constituted a clear violation. RFK Racing explained that the extra shim was inadvertently added during pre-race adjustments to correct a spoiler angle issue. 

NASCAR’s Commitment to Fair Play

Brad Moran, NASCAR Cup Series Managing Director, emphasized the organization’s dedication to maintaining a level playing field. He stated, “All fasteners need to be fastened and secure at all times during an event… We have to do our job to keep parity in the field. Everybody knows the rules.”
