Gordon Ryan, a decorated ADCC champion, will be in Jon Jones’ corner as the UFC heavyweight champion defends his title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309. Jones’ longtime jiu-jitsu coach, Roberto “Tussa” Alencar, revealed the news in an interview with MMA Fighting, explaining the significance of Ryan’s role and the elite training team Jones has assembled.
Alencar, who has trained Jones in grappling since 2015, is stepping back from cornering duties but praised Jones’ decision to involve Ryan, known for his dominance in no-gi grappling, in his camp.
“Gordon has been a great addition,” Alencar said. “Even with my black belt and years of experience, I’ve learned a lot from him. His expertise in ADCC-style no-gi grappling has enhanced Jon’s ground game significantly, especially alongside Gable Stevenson. Having the best in grappling and wrestling working with Jon has been incredible.”
Ryan, who holds the record for the most ADCC titles and is undefeated in 58 consecutive matches since 2018, has worked alongside Olympic gold medalist and wrestling standout Gable Stevenson to refine Jones’ grappling. Additionally, Jones has incorporated training with WBO boxing champion Joseph Parker to prepare for Miocic, a well-rounded fighter known for his boxing and wrestling skills.
“Stipe is a dangerous and complete fighter,” Alencar said. “Jon knows that and brought in the best in the world to prepare. That’s what makes him a champion.”
Alencar emphasized that Ryan’s presence in Jones’ corner will be invaluable, both for Jones and Ryan’s own career. “Gordon is in his prime, and having a champion in the corner with Jon adds to his arsenal on fight night,” Alencar explained.
As a proponent of jiu-jitsu, Alencar believes the ground game remains a crucial element in Jones’ path to victory. “Jon’s highlights are devastating when he’s on the ground with his ground and pound,” Alencar said. “That’s where he built his legacy. But Jon is also adaptable and ready for anything. Whether it’s striking, wrestling, or the mental game, he’s prepared to handle whatever comes his way.”
UFC 309 marks Jones’ 24th appearance in the Octagon and yet another opportunity for him to showcase his evolution as one of MMA’s most versatile and dominant fighters. With Ryan, Stevenson, and Parker in his corner, Jones has left no stone unturned in preparing for Miocic. Fans are eager to see how this star-studded team translates to success in the cage.
