Superstar edge rusher Micah Parsons has yet to play a game since the Dallas Cowboys’ Week 4 victory over the New York Giants.
From the beginning, Week 8 was seen as the target for Parsons’ return, especially since he wasn’t placed on Injured Reserve, and the Week 7 bye provided ideal timing.
However, just days before the NFC clash on Sunday Night Football, Parsons’ status remains uncertain.
On Monday, the star defender spoke to the media, but his comments didn’t provide much confidence regarding his availability.
“It’s still in the air,” Parsons said to reporters via The Athletic’s Jon Machota.
“My hopes are always very high. I love great challenges. I love being able to beat the odds. I’m gonna put this up to my trainers and my coaching staff.”
While Parsons said his return is undecided, his reference to playing being a “great challenge” and needing to “beat the odds” suggests that it would be a surprise if he is ready to play.
Not having Parsons for the game against the 49ers would be a significant blow. The Cowboys’ defensive line is already dealing with multiple injuries, and San Francisco has exploited the unit even when it was fully healthy in past matchups.
Without Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence, things could become very difficult for Mike Zimmer’s squad.
Earlier on Monday, head coach Mike McCarthy did not provide specific details on Parsons’ status but mentioned that he spent the bye week rehabbing his ankle injury at the team facility.
The Cowboys’ first injury report of the week will be released on Wednesday. While Parsons will be the biggest name to watch, there are other key players to monitor.
DaRon Bland was trending toward playing in Week 6 against the Detroit Lions but was held out after the final practice.
Eric Kendricks is another player who could return, but the Cowboys will evaluate their progress throughout the week before making any decisions.
