Derek Carr Announces Retirement After 11 NFL Seasons

New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has announced his retirement from the NFL after 11 seasons, citing a significant right shoulder injury. The 34-year-old veteran revealed that medical evaluations uncovered a labral tear and degenerative changes in his rotator cuff, making a return to play uncertain even with surgery.

In a heartfelt statement, Carr expressed gratitude for his career, saying, “Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League. For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience.”

Carr began his professional journey with the Oakland Raiders in 2014, earning four Pro Bowl selections and setting franchise records in completions, passing touchdowns, and passing yards. He joined the Saints in 2023 on a four-year, $150 million contract. Despite a promising start, his tenure in New Orleans was marred by injuries, including concussions, fractured ribs, and a left-hand injury, culminating in a 14-13 record over two seasons.

Carr’s retirement provides the Saints with $30 million in salary cap relief, though he retains a $10 million roster bonus.  The team is now looking to the future, having recently drafted Tyler Shough in the second round and previously acquiring quarterbacks Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler.

Beyond football, Carr is transitioning into the business world, becoming a key investor and brand ambassador for Frönen, a health-conscious frozen dessert company.

Carr concludes his NFL career with 41,245 passing yards, 257 touchdowns, and 112 interceptions, leaving a lasting legacy both on and off the field.
