Injuries continue to plague the 49ers

Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave suffered a partial triceps tear during yesterday’s loss to the Rams, head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed to reporters, according to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner. As a result, Hargrave is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

“It’s a significant loss, and I thought he played his best game yesterday,” Shanahan remarked about the injury, via Matt Barrows of The Athletic. “He was a major factor.”

Hargrave logged a season-high 39 defensive snaps in the game, recording his first sack of the season on Matthew Stafford, bringing his career total to 44.5 sacks.

After spending two successful seasons with the Eagles, where he totaled 18.5 sacks, Hargrave signed with the 49ers last offseason. He started all 16 games for San Francisco in 2023, notching 44 tackles and seven sacks, earning his second career Pro Bowl selection. He also started in all three of the team’s playoff games. The 31-year-old started the first three games of the 2024 season before this injury.

The 49ers have some depth at defensive tackle, with Maliek Collins already part of the rotation alongside Hargrave. Jordan Elliott and Kevin Givens could see increased playing time, while Sam Okuayinonu and practice squad DT T.Y. McGill may also be called upon.

In other injury news, Shanahan announced that running back Christian McCaffrey will travel to Germany this weekend to consult with a foot specialist. McCaffrey has been sidelined with an ongoing Achilles issue, and according to Wagoner, he hopes the visit will provide some clarity on the injury.
