Titans Signal Season Surrender with DeAndre Hopkins Trade: A Bold Move or a White Flag?

Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is being traded from the Tennessee Titans (1-5) to the Kansas City Chiefs (6-0), as confirmed by A to Z Sports.

The news was first reported by Adam Schefter of ESPN on Wednesday morning.

The move gives the veteran receiver a chance to compete for a Super Bowl this year, signaling that Tennessee has effectively conceded its 2024 campaign just eight weeks in.

Trading DeAndre Hopkins Was the Right Move by the Titans

The Titans will receive a conditional fifth-round draft pick that could turn into a fourth-round selection, according to multiple reports.

Kansas City’s wide receiver corps has faced several setbacks.

Hollywood Brown was sidelined during the preseason with a shoulder injury, Rashee Rice sustained a knee issue that will keep him out for the year, and JuJu Smith-Schuster is dealing with hamstring issues that will cost him some time.

Hopkins offers immediate help for the two-time defending champions.

For Tennessee, trading Hopkins might be the only positive decision the team has made this season.

After making significant investments around quarterback Will Levis this offseason, the Titans have struggled mightily.

In Week 7, they were dismantled 34-10 on the road by the Buffalo Bills (5-2). It has been a challenging year for first-year head coach Brian Callahan and his staff, who have been unable to find solutions for the team’s quarterback situation.

Backup Mason Rudolph started in Buffalo, filling in for the injured Levis.

Hopkins joined the Titans on a two-year, $26 million contract ahead of the 2023 season, reuniting with former Houston Texans coach Mike Vrabel and former offensive coordinator Tim Kelly.

However, Vrabel and his staff were replaced by Callahan this year, who was brought in to optimize Levis and modernize the Titans’ offense.

Unfortunately, no one has thrived under the new system, and Hopkins had the worst statistical start of his 12-year career, though not due to any fault of his own.

During his six games with Tennessee, Hopkins was targeted 21 times, making 15 catches for 173 yards and one touchdown.

The only time he produced less was in 2022, when he missed the first six games due to a suspension for violating the NFL’s PED policy.

Hopkins ends his Titans tenure with 90 receptions for 1,230 yards and eight touchdowns.

The Titans will face the Detroit Lions in Week 8. Tune in to Titans Radio’s pregame coverage starting at 9 a.m. CT on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville.
