June 12, 2025 – Mexico City, Mexico — Just days after a heavy crash at Michigan International Speedway, Alex Bowman has been cleared to race in this weekend’s Viva Mexico 250 in Mexico City, according to a statement from Hendrick Motorsports. However, the team also confirmed that Anthony Alfredo will travel with them as a designated backup driver, should Bowman be unable to complete the full race distance.

Bowman, the driver of the No. 48 Ally Chevrolet, was involved in a high-speed incident during last weekend’s Cup Series race at Michigan, which left him dealing with lingering back pain. He underwent medical evaluation earlier this week and was deemed fit to compete, though questions remain about how his body will hold up over the grueling race at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez — a track known for its physical demands and tricky layout.
“Alex has been evaluated by our team doctors and is good to go for Mexico City,” a Hendrick Motorsports spokesperson said. “Out of an abundance of caution, we’ve brought Anthony Alfredo as a backup in case Alex needs relief during the event.”
This isn’t the first time Bowman has battled injury-related concerns. In 2023, he missed multiple races due to a fractured vertebra following a sprint car crash. Since then, Hendrick Motorsports has taken a more conservative approach to driver health — especially when it involves back or spine-related issues.
Having Alfredo on standby ensures the team is prepared for any scenario. Alfredo, a former full-time Cup and Xfinity Series driver, has proven himself to be a reliable substitute and is familiar with the team’s systems and expectations.
For Bowman, the goal is clear: race smart, stay healthy, and secure a strong finish as the regular season winds down. He currently sits just outside the playoff bubble and needs consistent results to solidify his spot in the postseason.
“I feel okay, and I’m ready to go,” Bowman said in a brief media appearance Thursday. “Obviously, we’ll monitor things closely, but I’m here to race and give it everything I’ve got.”
The Viva Mexico 250 marks a significant stop on NASCAR’s international calendar and will be watched closely by fans both in Mexico and abroad. With intense competition, a passionate fanbase, and now a bit of medical drama thrown into the mix, Bowman’s weekend just got even more interesting.
Stay tuned for more updates from Mexico City as race day approaches.
