The Dallas Cowboys have declined the Chicago Bears’ request to interview their head coach, Mike McCarthy, for Chicago’s vacant head coaching position.
McCarthy’s contract with the Cowboys is set to expire on January 14, 2025. Until that date, Dallas retains exclusive negotiating rights and can prevent other teams from engaging with him. This decision suggests that the Cowboys may be considering retaining McCarthy beyond his current contract, despite a disappointing 7-10 season that resulted in missing the playoffs.
The Bears, actively seeking a replacement for former head coach Matt Eberflus, have been exploring various candidates for the position. In addition to their interest in McCarthy, they are scheduled to interview former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, who stepped down after the 2023 season and served as an adviser this past year.
While McCarthy has expressed a desire to continue his tenure with the Cowboys, stating, “I have a lot invested here. And the Cowboys have a lot invested in me,” the team’s recent performance has led to speculation about potential changes in the coaching staff.
As the offseason progresses, both the Cowboys and the Bears will continue to make strategic decisions regarding their coaching staffs, aiming to position themselves for improved performances in the upcoming season.
