Fire Erupts in Daytona Paddock Ahead of Rolex 24; Swift Response Ensures Safety

On the afternoon of January 22, 2025, a fire erupted in the Yellow Garage area of Daytona International Speedway, adjacent to the Sunoco refueling station in the WeatherTech Championship paddock. The incident occurred during preparations for the upcoming Rolex 24 at Daytona, a highlight of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing gray smoke billowing from the paddock area, causing concern among fans and team personnel. The Daytona Beach Fire Department, along with the Speedway’s Emergency Services team, responded promptly to the scene. Their swift action ensured that the fire was quickly contained and extinguished, preventing any injuries or significant damage to surrounding structures.

The fire led to a brief halt in on-track activities, including the Michelin Pilot Challenge practice session. However, once the situation was under control, events resumed as scheduled, minimizing disruptions to the day’s planned activities.

In an official statement, Daytona International Speedway expressed gratitude for the rapid response of the emergency teams: “Thanks to the quick work of the Daytona Beach Fire Department and Daytona International Speedway Emergency Services team, the fire was quickly contained and extinguished.” The statement also confirmed that there were no injuries and that the state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.

The incident occurred just days before the Rolex 24 at Daytona, scheduled for the upcoming weekend. Despite the brief disruption, teams continued their preparations for the endurance race, with all 61 participating cars assembled for a group photo earlier in the day. The event is set to feature a diverse lineup of drivers, including six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon, NASCAR stars Austin Cindric and Shane van Gisbergen, and defending champions Felipe Nasr, Dane Cameron, and Matt Campbell.

The swift resolution of the fire incident underscores the effectiveness of the emergency response protocols at Daytona International Speedway, ensuring the safety of all participants and spectators as the venue prepares to host one of the most prestigious endurance races in motorsport.
