Kasey Kahne, a former NASCAR Cup Series driver with 18 wins, is making a comeback this weekend at Rockingham Speedway in the Xfinity Series. This marks his first NASCAR-sanctioned race since stepping away in 2018 due to health issues.

Health Concerns Prompted 2018 Retirement
In 2018, while driving for Leavine Family Racing, Kahne began experiencing severe dehydration and heat exhaustion during races. These health challenges led to his early retirement from full-time NASCAR competition. Kahne explained, “I just can’t control the temperature of my body and my heart rate. Once it gets to that point, there’s nothing I can do until I get out of the car” .
A Return to the Track at Rockingham
Now 45, Kahne is set to drive the No. 33 Chevrolet for Richard Childress Racing in the Xfinity Series race at Rockingham Speedway on April 19, 2025. This event, the North Carolina Education Lottery 250, marks NASCAR’s return to Rockingham for the first time since 2004 .
Kahne initiated his return by reaching out to Keith Rodden, RCR’s vice president of competition, expressing interest in participating in the Rockingham race. After discussions, the opportunity materialized, and Kahne began preparations for his comeback.
Reflecting on his return, Kahne shared, “It doesn’t feel like I’ve been out of NASCAR as long as I have. Time flies, and I’m glad to be back doing this race” .
Focused on Rockingham
While Kahne is enthusiastic about his return, he emphasized that his current focus is solely on the Rockingham race. He stated, “Putting it all into Rockingham right now. The situation that I’m in is very good. Really enjoying the whole process” .
As Kahne prepares to compete once again, fans and fellow drivers alike are eager to see him back on the track, bringing his experience and passion to the race at Rockingham.
