As Kyle Larson prepares for the grueling task of competing in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day—a feat known as “The Double”—NASCAR has granted him a significant exemption. Larson has been excused from attending the mandatory drivers’ meeting and pre-race introductions for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. This exemption ensures that he will not be required to start at the rear of the field should he miss these events due to scheduling conflicts.
The Indianapolis 500 is scheduled to begin at 12:45 p.m. ET, while the Coca-Cola 600 is set for a 6:00 p.m. ET start. The tight turnaround between the two races presents logistical challenges, making it difficult for Larson to participate in all pre-race activities at Charlotte. NASCAR’s decision to waive these requirements acknowledges the unique circumstances of Larson’s attempt to complete both races in a single day.
This marks Larson’s second attempt at “The Double.” In 2024, inclement weather delayed the start of the Indianapolis 500, leading to a cascade of scheduling issues that ultimately prevented him from participating in the Coca-Cola 600. This year, with more favorable weather forecasts, Larson aims to complete all 1,100 miles of racing.
Larson will start 19th in the Indianapolis 500, driving the No. 17 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet. Following the conclusion of the race, he plans to travel swiftly to Charlotte to pilot his No. 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet in the Coca-Cola 600.
Only one driver, Tony Stewart in 2001, has successfully completed all laps of both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. Larson’s exemption from pre-race formalities removes a significant hurdle, allowing him to focus solely on the demanding physical and mental challenge ahead.
