Kyle Larson Identifies “Shorter, Flatter” Tracks as Key Challenge in NASCAR Playoffs
With the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs about to begin, 2021 champion Kyle Larson has no shortage of confidence in his team’s speed and preparation. But the Hendrick Motorsports star is also realistic about where the road ahead could get bumpy — specifically at shorter, flatter tracks.

Speaking ahead of the opening round at Darlington, Larson admitted that certain tracks on the playoff schedule present a greater challenge than others.
“Not something that I was thrilled about,” Larson said when asked about his weakest points. “The shorter, flatter tracks — that’s where we’ve struggled to put everything together.”
While Larson has proven himself one of the most versatile drivers in the field, his numbers back up the concern. Tracks like Phoenix, Richmond, and Martinsville — all critical to the championship chase — have historically been less friendly to his driving style compared to intermediate ovals or high-banked speedways where he thrives.
The acknowledgment is part of a broader playoff theme: every contender is weighing strengths against vulnerabilities as the pressure ramps up. For Larson, the challenge will be to minimize damage at his weaker venues while capitalizing on tracks where Hendrick’s No. 5 team typically excels.
Still, Larson’s confidence remains high. The former Cup champion has wins on nearly every style of circuit, and with playoff preparation in full swing, he believes his team can adapt.
“We’ve been working hard to close the gap,” Larson said. “We know those races can make the difference in advancing, so the goal is to maximize points even when we’re not at our best tracks.”
As the playoffs unfold, Larson will look to add consistency to his trademark speed. If he can tame the shorter, flatter circuits that have historically tripped him up, he’ll once again be a major threat to hoist the championship trophy in Phoenix this November
