As the debate over national anthem protests continues to ripple across American sports, several NASCAR team owners have weighed in with strong words — and even stronger stances. Over the weekend, multiple owners said they would not tolerate protests from their drivers or crew members during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

During Sunday’s pre-race ceremonies at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, reporters asked prominent team owners about the prospect of anthem protests in NASCAR, a response to demonstrations that began in the NFL with quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the anthem in 2016 to protest racial injustice and police brutality.
Richard Childress, owner of Richard Childress Racing and former team owner for Dale Earnhardt Sr., said he would view such actions as grounds for termination.
“Get you a ride on a Greyhound bus when the national anthem is over,” Childress told reporters. “Anybody that works for me should respect the country and the flag. Period.”
Richard Petty, seven-time NASCAR champion and owner of Richard Petty Motorsports, echoed similar sentiments. Asked what would happen if one of his employees protested during the anthem, Petty replied, “Anybody that don’t stand up for the anthem ought to be out of the country. Period. What got ‘em where they’re at? The United States.”
When asked if he would fire an employee who protested, Petty didn’t hesitate: “You’re right.”
Andrew Murstein, the minority owner of Richard Petty Motorsports, struck a slightly different tone, saying in a statement that while he personally supports standing for the anthem, he also believes in the right to free expression.
“I believe in the cause that people are protesting, and it’s unfortunate that some are not recognizing that,” Murstein said. “I would hope and encourage anyone associated with our team to stand for the anthem, but I wouldn’t fire someone for expressing their beliefs peacefully.”
Trump Responds
The comments drew national attention and were quickly endorsed by President Donald Trump, who has been a vocal critic of NFL players protesting during the anthem.
“So proud of NASCAR and its supporters and fans. They won’t put up with disrespecting our Country or our Flag – they said it loud
