In a surprising development, Spire Motorsports and veteran crew chief Rodney Childers have mutually agreed to part ways just nine races into the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season. Childers, who joined Spire following the closure of Stewart-Haas Racing, had been leading the No. 7 Chevrolet team driven by Justin Haley.

Childers, renowned for his championship-winning tenure with Kevin Harvick in 2014, expressed that the collaboration with Spire “just wasn’t working for either of us.” He conveyed gratitude for his time with the team and indicated plans to take a break to focus on family and contemplate future opportunities in the racing world.
Spire Motorsports co-owner Jeff Dickerson acknowledged the challenges faced by the team, stating, “The break in the Cup Series schedule gave us a chance to evaluate where we are as a program… we collectively acknowledged challenges with the team dynamic.”
With Haley currently 23rd in the Cup standings and a best finish of 10th at Homestead, Spire has appointed Ryan Sparks to return as crew chief for the No. 7 team. Sparks, who previously served in this role before being promoted to Director of Competition, will now handle both responsibilities as the team moves forward.
As the NASCAR season progresses, the motorsports community will be watching to see how both Spire Motorsports and Rodney Childers navigate their new paths.
