Tragedy at Bowman Gray: Racing Community Mourns Robbie Brewer

Winston-Salem, NC – August 11, 2025 – The motorsports world is reeling after the untimely death of longtime short-track driver Robbie Brewer at Bowman Gray Stadium.

Brewer, a revered competitor in the Sportsman division, suffered a medical emergency—reportedly a heart attack—while racing late Saturday night, August 9, during the first of two 20-lap features. Coming off a restart with four laps remaining, his car veered uncontrollably into the outside wall in Turn 4, causing a severe crash. Safety crews had to remove the roof to extract him before he was rushed to a nearby hospital, where his family confirmed he passed away Sunday morning at the age of 53  .

A fixture at Bowman Gray for over three decades, Brewer notched 311 career starts across multiple divisions—including 259 Sportsman races—amassing 11 wins and the 2011 Sportsman championship. He also claimed multiple titles in the 602 Modified Tour and the 602 Super Limited Series  .

Brewer’s death marks the first fatality at the storied stadium since Bubba Beck in 2002. It becomes the fifth overall, with previous tragedies occurring in 1947, 1950, and 1958—all underscoring the track’s long, complex history  .

Local racers were quick to voice their tribute. Brad Lewis, a close friend and competitor, shared:

“He was my family. A true man’s man. I’m broken, as most are that he touched through his life. I will never forget you, Robbie. I’ll be driving for you.”

On social platforms, fans echoed the sorrow, describing it as “a terrible day for stock-car racing” and highlighting how shockingly sudden the loss felt even in today’s safer racing landscape  .

Bowman Gray Stadium released a statement offering condolences: “We are saddened by the passing of Robbie Brewer… Robbie was a talented and passionate racer, and highly respected competitor among his peers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Robbie’s family and friends at this time.”
