Benno Yung Tin-pang’s 12-year career as a trainer will come to an end next month with the season finale, as he has told the Jockey Club that he will not be applying for a license for the upcoming term. Days before the Jockey Club’s licensing committee was scheduled to declare Yung’s future, he made his decision. For some time, it appeared that this season would be Yung’s final one because he has reached the mandatory retirement age set by the Jockey Club at age 66 and has not fulfilled the requirements for an extension. After battling acute myeloid leukemia for a while last year, Yung made a great comeback to the track and will retire with a high profile.
With 17 winners since he returned to the races in November, Yung’s stable has been doing well. Before becoming an assistant trainer in 1991, Yung began his career as a jockey in Hong Kong. In his first season of training, in 2013–14, he recorded an outstanding 37 triumphs, and in 2021–22, he had a personal-best return of 39 victories. With 10 games left in his final season, he has 358 victories overall, 18 of which have already occurred in 2024–2025. Yung will undoubtedly be eager to continue making money while he can after winning two of the previous three matches, including the victory of $18.1 chance Aeris Nova in Sunday night’s conclusion at Sha Tin.
Day Day Victory was sent out as the $4.4 favorite for his return to Class Four on May 21, but he was only able to finish in eighth place. He had won twice at the course and distance in Class Five in recent months. For Wednesday night’s race, Alexis Badel continues to ride the four-year-old, and the French rider has barrier three available on a galloper that can only carry 118 pounds.
