Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese, whose media-hyped rivalry with Caitlin Clark has drawn significant attention, delivered a powerful response on social media following the WNBA’s condemnation of the racist abuse faced by players.
The league’s statement came after Connecticut Sun players revealed the hateful comments they received during their series win over the Indiana Fever.
Reese shared a video from ESPN, in which analyst Andraya Carter described it as “heartbreaking” that players were enduring online abuse. Reese criticized the media, accusing them of allowing the abuse to proliferate.
“For the past two years, the media has profited from my struggles and villainized me to craft a narrative.
They enabled this. It served their interests,” Reese posted on X. “I sometimes share my experiences, but I’ve allowed this to happen for far too long, and now other players in this league are facing the same issues. This is unacceptable.”
She added, “Any criticism that goes beyond the game we love is wrong. I apologize to all the players who have or continue to go through what I have.. This is why I started my podcast to reclaim my voice and shape the narrative of who I truly am. I’m not looking for an apology, nor do I think this will end, but something has to change…”
